This coin was minted in Corinth, Greece during the reign of the Emperor Tiberius (14-37AD). It is
18 mm in diameter, featuring the Laureate head of Tiberius and the Greek goddess of victory, Nike,
standing holding a wreath and palm frond.
Corinth was one of the most important cities during Bible times. It was located on the narrow isthmus connecting mainland Greece to the Peloponnese peninsula. It was a centre of trade and commerce, The city had an estimated population of over 90,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in the ancient world. It was to the Church at Corinth that the Apostle Paul wrote 1st and 2nd Corinthians.
Acts of the Apostles chapter 18 records the Apostle Paul’s time in the city of Corinth. He arrived
around 52AD and stayed in the city for about a year and a half. This little coin would still have been
in use in the city when Paul was there. It would have been used in thousands of transactions in the
Agora/marketplace.
In Acts 18v12-17 we find the apostle Paul facing legal accusations before Gallio, the proconsul of Achaia, at the Bema/Judgment seat in Corinth. Despite the accusations levelled against him, Paul experiences God’s protection and providence. Gallio dismisses the charges, refusing to adjudicate in what he perceives as a religious dispute.

In September 2024 I visited Ancient Corinth and stood at that very Bema seat where the Apostle Paul stood. I was reminded that, as a Christian, I must stand at the Bema Judgement seat of Christ to give an account of my service to my Lord and Saviour. 2nd Corinthians 5v10 says, "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad."
Those who do not know Christ and die in their sins will appear before the Great White Throne -
Revelation chapter 20 v 11-15. Don't end up there! Repent and believe the Gospel. Trust in the
Lord Jesus Christ to save you. Ist Corinthians 15 v1-8 - "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the
gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also
you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to
the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the
Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over
five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have
fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was
seen by me also, as by one born out of due time".
