Coin from Philippi 41-68 AD

This coin was struck/minted in the Roman colony of Philippi Macedon/Macedonia between 41-68AD, during the reign of Claudius or Nero. It was struck to commemorate the victory at the battle of Philippi in 42BC where the forces of Mark Antony and Octavian defeated the leaders of Julus Caesar’s assassination - Brutus and Cassius. It is 20mm in diameter and features Three Standard on the reverse and the goddess of victory Nike standing on a plinth on the obverse. The sports brand Nike was named after this pagan goddess.

The Apostle Paul arrived in Phillipi around 51-52AD. We read a dramatic account in Acts 16 v 16-40 of Paul and Silas spending a night in the prison there, where they sang “Praises onto God and the prisoners heard them” Acts 16v25. Suddenly, there was an earthquake. The Jailer ran in to see if the prisoners were still there. He was terrified. If they had escaped, he would have been executed. “Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Acts 16v29-30. Paul and Silas didn't tell him to join a church, get confirmed, do penance, give money or do good works. Their reply was “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved” and right there he came as a sinner, putting his faith in Christ as his saviour.

Friend, if you are reading this and are not saved ? Only the Lord Jesus Christ can save you John 14v6 Acts 4v12  Realise and accept that you are a sinner, and that you will have to face God one day. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3v23. “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God”. John 3v18
That old rough jailer could have sung the words of this lovely hymn:

“It was down at the feet of Jesus, O the happy, happy day!
That my soul found peace in believing,
And my sins were washed away.”
